What would Dad think? “It’s funny because Jordon and I, we say that a lot, too,” Donovan told The Charlotte Observer over the phone earlier this week. “We just really wonder what Skip would be saying. How would he be reacting?” “Honestly, I don’t know,” Jordon began. He then laughed. “I mean, well, I do know.” James “Skip” Brooks would be happy, the son said. “And I can only imagine how happy he’d be.” When Jonathon Brooks makes his NFL debut Sunday, he’ll be playing for a lot of people. The second-round draft pick, who has missed the first chunk of his rookie season recovering from an ACL tear he suffered Nov. 11 of last year, will be playing for his friends. He’ll be playing for his teammates. He’ll be playing for his mother, who helped raise her shy kid from a small southern Texas town who has a gift for finding the open field. He’ll be playing for his brother, who he used to ride bikes with and jump on trampolines with and played living room football with until the end zone couches couldn’t take anymore. He’ll also be playing for his father, who fueled his football dream, who died in 2022 but who Brooks is convinced has been watching over him since. “I feel like I play for a bigger reason,” Jonathon said. “I play for God, my family.” As he always has. It’s not hard to see why. The first came when Jonathon was a freshman at Hallettsville High. Jordon, then a senior, remembers it well. It was the seventh week of the 2017 football season, and Jonathon, who’d been tearing it up at the JV level, had gotten called up to varsity. The offense was less than 5 yards away from the end zone. For years, Jordon had seen what others hadn’t. That’s what happens when you’re two of nine grandchildren, part of a big family that featured three uncles and five aunts on Dad’s side and three uncles on Mom’s. It’s also what happens when you’re the son of Skip. Skip Brooks was born and raised in Shiner, Texas, a slightly bigger town than neighboring Hallettsville that is known for its Shiner Bock beer. He was a football player back in the day and used to tease his kids that he was a great running back, too — that they’re lucky they didn’t have video to show how elusive he was. Skip loved his boys and loved pushing them in their shared passion for football. He coached them at times when they were running around in the community’s youth leagues. Jordon acknowledges that “I know he’s my brother and all” but “the way he could see the field was insane at a young age.” And that’s why when coach called a handoff-counter-right on that Friday night in the fall of 2017, Jordon knew what would happen: a touchdown. With no planned celebration, Jonathon just sprinted to his brother, who’d already jogged to his position as a blocker on the PAT team, and jumped up and celebrated with a shoulder bump. A newspaper photographer captured it mid-air; that’s one of Jennifer’s favorite pictures in her scrapbook, she said. “I almost wish they were closer in age and could have more time playing together because it was just really a lot of fun,” Jennifer said. “Everybody in town was super excited.” The second memorable touchdown came four years later, while Jonathon was at Texas. A lot had happened in those four years. He’d go on long road trips with his father and brother — from San Antonio to Florida to California — to play football and get people to see him play. As a sophomore, Jonathon was offered a scholarship to Texas. As a senior, he lived up to that billing, putting up stats that made eyes across the country pop: 3,530 yards and 62 touchdowns on 350 carries. Who is this guy, and where is Hallettsville? That second special touchdown came late in the fourth quarter in a game against Rice. The Longhorns were on the good side of a blowout. Brooks took a handoff from the shotgun, ran left and sliced through the defense for a 17-yard score. That score was the only one he got in the 2021 season, when he backed up Bijan Robinson, now with the Atlanta Falcons. It was also the only collegiate touchdown his father saw. Skip Brooks passed away March 28, 2022, during a spring practice of Jonathon’s sophomore year. Kidney disease ran in the family, and he was on and off dialysis for years. A few months after restarting dialysis in December 2021, he underwent surgery, and complications from that surgery formed a blood clot, which ultimately killed him. The loss of Skip was an incalculable one for a Shiner community who adored him and a devastating one for the family who loved him. That leads us to the third touchdown — and to the many more thereafter. Jonathon and Jordon, a few weeks after the death of their father, each got tattoos on their forearms that read the date March 28, 2022 in roman numerals with “Dad” emblazoned over it. Every time Jonathon stomps into paydirt now — and every time he will in the future — the shy, small-town Texas kid taps his forearm, as if he’s ringing Skip’s heavenly doorbell, and points to the sky. ‘To finally live out his dream’ You’re probably familiar with Jonathon Brooks from here. After waiting two seasons to be the premier back at Texas — behind talents Roschon Johnson and Robinson — he broke out like everyone figured he would as a redshirt sophomore. In 11 games that 2023 season, he finished with 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing, enough to solidify him as one of the best running backs in the country. That 11th game, against TCU, Brooks tore his right ACL. That meant no NFL scouting combine. No Senior Bowl appearances. But that didn’t stunt Brooks’ NFL stock. The Panthers selected Brooks in the second round of this year’s draft, making him the first running back taken off the board. And despite reports of his timeline being ready by training camp — that it was a complete tear, making the recovery process potentially less complicated — the Panthers’ brass made it clear that they were content taking their time with Brooks. That time almost came two weeks ago, when Brooks was activated to the 53-man roster. But on Sunday, that time will finally come: Panthers coach Dave Canales said that he “fully expects” Brooks to make his debut against the Chiefs — and it’s possible to expect him to get more touches than he otherwise might, with typical third-down back Miles Sanders still nursing an ankle injury from Week 10. It might not be a lot of touches, of course. Panther running backs not-named Chuba Hubbard have only earned 42 rushes through 10 games. But the most memorable moments for Jonathon haven’t come in the biggest seasons, after all. They’ve come in the smaller moments. They’ve all involved his family, too: as a freshman in high school celebrating with his older brother; as a freshman at Texas scoring the last touchdown Skip saw; as a player now, every time he hits the end zone and points to his father. Much has been written about Islam as a provocateur of violence and an outlier from the two other Abrahamic faiths, Judaism and Christianity. Too often, we look at Islam through a Western colonial, theological and cultural lens based on the assumptions that Western culture and monotheistic religious traditions and the extensive scholarship of Judaism and Christianity are far more historically and morally advanced and truthful than that those of Islam. Dr Ahmed’s book is a wake-up call to understand the fallacy of such thinking. The Golden Age of Islam occurred between 622 AD to1258 AD. It was an incredible time, when Muslim scholars aided by the patronage of Caliphs and Monarchs generated significant discoveries and advancements in the sciences, arts, the humanities, studies of the nature of God, the human soul and creation. Muslim scholars were heavily influenced by ancient, classical Greek philosophy, medicine, theology, the humanities, the sciences and nature espoused by Aristotle, Plato and Hippocrates. Avicenna, an eminent Persian polymath was heavily influenced by Greek scholarship, philosophy and thought. He was a shining light in the world of Islam being a gifted scholar contributing to the multiple fields of medicine, navigation, astronomy, zoology, botany, astrology, mathematics, philosophy and the humanities. Other significant Persian scholars impacted by the scholarship and learning of the time were Jamshid al-Kashi, astronomer, and mathematician and Al-Ghazali, who following the death of the Prophet Muhammad [PBUH], became the foremost authority of Islam, its theology and jurisprudence. The geographical proximity of Persia to the ancient lands of Greece and its scholars provided access for Islamic scholars and philosophers to engage with and translate the written works of Aristotle, Plato and Socrates from classical Greek into Persian and Arabic. He was a proponent of the thinking that the body is basic, dealing with material and physical aspects of human life, and that to embrace one’s Faith one must also possess knowledge, intelligence allowing no room for ignorance, a maxim of Socrates. Socrates’ teaching about democracy was that it could not survive if it was left in the hands of and embraced by an uneducated populace. Maimonides and his scholarship as a brilliant religious academic and Rabbi is still regarded as the iconic bridge builder joining the three monotheistic faiths, Judaism, Christianity and Islam together under the banner of the dignity of difference. The Golden Age of Islam was a time when the emergence of universally held moral imperatives and values contained in the core teaching of all three Abrahamic faiths was becoming a reality. Belief in one God and possessing faith in that belief, loving God and neighbour as God loves us, possessing mercy and compassion, kindness and care for those who are in physical proximity with us and who are not of our faith, adhering to the principal of equal Justice under the Law, forgiveness, respecting the human dignity of the “other” regardless of their faith, ethnicity, gender or social status were all gifts from the Islamic scholars of the age. The Quran’s words from the Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] call for the faithful to express tolerance, kindness, respectfulness, charity towards those in need and a love of God and humankind. God possesses the final judgement of one’s behaviour toward others. God loves justice and those who seek it especially for those who are different. One may forgive without loving, but one cannot love without forgiving and there is no compassion in love, but love is much more than simply bearing the burden of others. Interpreting Islam In Saudi Arabia And Afghanistan: Contrasting Paths In Faith And Society I must say, however, that once again Ahmed has written a book that must be read by as many people as possible who can still find joy and wisdom in reading – and who have a taste for understanding the role of Islam in its Golden Age and its impact on the West, Interfaith Dialogue and those who serve our country as political leaders. This is especially the case now that we are facing a very difficult time as a divided and somewhat illiterate populace. So much scholarly work and enterprise contained in the shared theologies of Islam, Christianity and Judaism by scholars and philosophers has generated a set of core values that define acceptable human behaviour within the complexity of engaging the “other” in a very divided and too often violent world. The work of Dr Ahmed raises a question about if we are now living in a global values vacuum, where theology is being processed and weaponised by politics – and by far too many believers who at best are illiterate when it comes to really understanding and living the core values of behaviour as espoused in the teachings contained in the Holy Books of Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Has secularism and unbridled technological change empowered people to accept bad behaviour in a badly behaving world? And if this is so, then who will be the contemporary scholars, philosophers and theologians whose shared academic work will be translatable and transformational for those who claim to follow the Law and the Prophets, the teachings of Jesus and Muhammad [peace be upon them] but who somehow continue to be held prisoner by the values vacuum of the 21st century.

L ooking for a new social media platform because X, Threads and Mastodon just aren’t cutting it? You could try Bluesky. People seeking to avoid chaos, noise and political bluster in the aftermath of the U.S. elections are noticing a different mood on the Bluesky social platform, where the vibe is seemingly welcoming and there are noticeably fewer trolls. The site announced it had rapidly added more than a million new users in the week after Election Day, and has emerged as one of the fastest growing rivals to Elon Musk’s X and similar platforms. If you’re tempted to check out the new space, here’s a guide on how Bluesky works: Maybe you’re not ready to commit to adding yet another social media account. No problem — you can still look around on Bluesky without signing up because all posts and profiles are public. You might get a sense of deja vu, because the platform’s look and feel are very similar to X. That should be no surprise because Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was an early Bluesky champion. (Dorsey’s no longer involved with Bluesky, which is owned and run by its executive team as a public benefit corporation.) If you take the plunge and get an account, you’ll need a username. You’ll notice Bluesky handles are a little bit different because they end by default in the site’s domain, .bsky.social. You can personalize your handle to make it more memorable, by using your own website’s domain or buying a custom one through Bluesky. But it might not be something most newbie users need or want to do right away. Bluesky boasts that it gives users “algorithmic choice” to tailor the content they’re shown instead of leaving it up to the whims of a centralized system. “Our online experience doesn’t have to depend on billionaires unilaterally making decisions over what we see,” it says. What it means is that you can follow custom feeds set up by other users, or design your own. If you tap #Feeds in the menu on the left, you’ll see some default offerings like Cat Pics and Gardening. My Bangers is a list of your most popular posts by likes and Catch Up shows the site’s most popular posts from the past 24 hours. You can find more by doing a search and tapping the Feeds button. There’s also the usual “Discover” feed of suggested posts and a chronological feed of accounts that you follow. To help new users settle in, Bluesky has starter packs of recommended feeds and accounts to follow, which anyone can create and share. They don’t show up in Bluesky’s search results but can be found in directories online. Or someone might share one with you. After I signed up, a colleague pointed me to one for major news outlets. There are tens of thousands of starter packs, ranging from broadly appealing topics like Taylor Swift to niche interests like cargo bikes or U.K. comedians. You can follow the whole pack or scroll down the list to choose individual accounts. What about people you followed on X? There’s a browser extension tool called Sky Follower Bridge that will help you find X users who’ve migrated to Bluesky. But check before clicking the follow button to make sure it’s not a different user using the same display name or handle. Ready to join the conversation? You can write posts or reply to others but keep it short because there’s a limit of 300 characters — 20 more than on X. You can also upload photos and videos, though videos can’t be longer than 60 seconds. GIFs and emojis are, of course, available too. You can still @ people by typing in their username, like posts by tapping a heart icon or use hashtags to highlight a theme. Bluesky has added a menu to hashtags, so when you click on one you’ll get different options for seeing, or muting, posts on that topic. Bluesky’s decentralization ethos extends to the content control options it offers. For starters, users can choose in their settings menu whether to see replies, reposts or quote posts in their feed. Specific words or tags can be muted temporarily, or forever, while accounts can be muted or blocked individually, or in bulk by adding them a moderation list. You can even fine tune the level of adult content that shows up in your feed. Bluesky has a team of content moderators to police the site for material that’s illegal or breaks the rules. But it’s also taking a different approach by open-sourcing its content moderation system in an attempt to resolve problems with traditional moderation services which it says “lack transparency and user control.” So, individuals or groups can set up their own content filters, or labelers, that go beyond what Bluesky offers. These labelers can be used to categorize content or users, which can then be blocked or hidden. They suddenly have renewed optimism this week after an uplifting victory over the San Francisco 49ers that snapped a six-game losing streak against their arch-rival that dated to 2021. It’s very much like a playoff mindset for us at this point.” The win over the 49ers, which was capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by quarterback Geno Smith with 18 seconds left, put the Seahawks in a much better place mentally than they’d been in over the previous six weeks. The inmate, Robert Brooks, 43, died in the hospital a day after the Dec. 9 attack. “I do not take lightly the release of this video, especially in the middle of the holiday season,” James said at a virtual news conference. “These videos are shocking and disturbing,” she added. Brooks can be seen in the videos with his hands cuffed behind his back. In one video, he is sitting up as an officer presses his foot down on him. He is then punched by two officers. At another point, he is forcefully yanked from the bed by his shirt collar and held up above the ground, his face visibly bloodied. Last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to begin the process of firing 14 workers at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County, where the incident occurred. A sign of contempt for the government’s healthcare decisions arrived in Durham Wednesday. A community that’s lost all its inpatient hospital beds and overnight ER hours, all within the past several months. “We need to stop this now, or I don't think we'll be able to bring things back and have a healthy public system,” said Norah Beatty, co-chair of the Grey-Bruce Health Coalition. A large “Trojan Horse” signifying the government’s “duplicity” when it comes to healthcare decisions made one of it’s final stops in Durham Wednesday as part of its cross-Ontario tour, organized by the Ontario Health Coalition and Ontario Coalition of Hospital Unions. “Ford says, you know, they keep pumping money into the health care system, but, I mean, one ER closure is one too many, and we've had far too many over the last year. I mean, even the bigger cities, they're at gridlock,” said Ontario Coalition of Hospital Unions 1st Vice President Kevin Cook. In communities like Durham and Chesley, who are now both operating with part-time emergency rooms, there is frustration, but also a glimmer of hope as the governing hospital board at the centre of the healthcare cuts offers community consultations for the public. West Grey council is awaiting word on an appeal, asked for the Ministry of Health and Attorney General, into their judicial review of what led to the reduction in ER hours and removal of inpatient beds from the Durham hospital earlier this year. “Maybe they do feel that they're guilty, and they don't want to get there,” said West Grey Mayor Kevin Eccles. The tour ends Saturday, but the folks here in Durham say the fight to save healthcare in their community and across the province will not stop when the Trojan tour does. “Both these communities built these hospitals, paid for them more than 100 years ago. They provided service to the people in these communities through two World Wars and a major depression. And, we can't give up on them now. We're here to save them,” said Scott. “This just enlightens it that much more so that the fight certainly isn't over. The Biden administration imposed export controls to limit the ability of China and Russia ability to access U.S.-made chips after Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago. The agency's Bureau of Industry and Security, according to the report, does not have the resources to enforce export controls and has been too reliant on U.S. chip makers voluntarily complying with the rules. But the push for bolstering Commerce's export control enforcement comes as the incoming Trump administration says it is looking to dramatically reduce the size and scope of federal government . President-elect Donald Trump has tapped entrepreneurs Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” to dismantle parts of the federal government. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report. The subcommittee in September published a report that found aggregated exports from four major U.S. advanced chip manufacturers nearly doubled from 2021 to 2022 to Armenia and Georgia. China, meanwhile, has created “vast, barely disguised smuggling networks which enable it to continue to harness U.S. technology,” the subcommittee report asserts. Washington has been gradually expanding the number of companies affected by such export controls in China, as President Joe Biden’s administration has encouraged an expansion of investments in and manufacturing of chips in the U.S. But Chinese companies have found ways to evade export controls in part because of a lack of China subject matter experts and Chinese speakers assigned to Commerce's export control enforcement. The agency's current budget limits the number of international end-use checks, or physical verification overseas of distributors or companies receiving American-made chips that are the supposed end users of products. Currently, Commerce has only 11 export control officers spread around the globe to conduct such checks. The committee made several recommendations in its report, including Congress allocating more money for hiring additional personnel to enforce export controls, imposing larger fines on companies that violate controls and requiring periodic reviews of advanced chip companies’ export control plans by outside entities. ‘Living in a home that damages health the norm for far too many older people’Wyoming and Utah may get what they’ve been pining for in recent years: the breakup of PacifiCorp. The electric utility giant has increasingly struggled to mesh pro-fossil-fuel policies favored by those states with cleaner energy policies preferred in other places it operates like California, Oregon and Washington. But what a “corporate realignment” — which the company has not yet formally proposed — might look like and what it might mean for Wyoming ratepayers remains unknown. For now, the company will still pursue its existing rate hike proposals and otherwise make investments to continue to serve its customers, according to utility officials. There’s one thing for certain: It won’t be all roses. “Just like any breakup of any partnership, or of any business, it’s not cost-free,” PacifiCorp’s Rocky Mountain Power President Dick Garlish told the Utah Legislature’s Public Utilities, Energy and Technology Interim Committee on Wednesday. Garlish, who took the helm of Rocky Mountain Power earlier this year, was grilled by Utah lawmakers as he discussed PacifiCorp’s corporate realignment report — a preliminary analysis demanded by Utah lawmakers. Nearly two more years are needed to fully develop realignment scenarios — guided by six different states and other stakeholders — that offer estimates for breakup costs, ongoing operational costs and potential benefits, he added. “This [uncertainty] is the way it’s going to be because this is a big negotiation and a lot of math involved,” Garlish said. Though each of the six states will help direct the potential reorganization of the utility, Garlish added, no single state or stakeholder can dictate it. PacifiCorp is part of billionaire Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate. The regulated monopoly utility operates in six western states, including Wyoming, Utah and Idaho under its Rocky Mountain Power division. Rocky Mountain Power is the largest electrical service provider in Wyoming, where it also operates several wind farms, decades-old coal-fired power plants on the verge of retirement due to escalating costs and has majority ownership of the Jim Bridger coal plant near Rock Springs. Like pro-fossil fuel officials in Utah, Wyoming lawmakers have berated the company in recent years for its gradual shift from planet-warming coal-fired power generation to cleaner forms of power like wind and solar. The intermittent availability of solar and wind power presents reliability issues, they say, while industrializing landscapes in their states for the benefit of the company’s West Coast customers. Meantime, the company has pressed for a series of double-digit rate increases in recent years — hikes so steep they have shocked both ratepayers and their elected representatives. Last year, Rocky Mountain Power proposed a historic 29.2% rate increase for its Wyoming customers, which state authorities whittled to 5.5%. Wyoming customers then saw another 9.3% rate hike temporarily imposed in July, and the utility is now seeking an additional 14.7% increase. The unprecedented rate hikes, in Wyoming and elsewhere, are necessary to recover money the company has already spent to provide electrical services under myriad, monumental energy-market and policy shifts, Garlish said. “Hundreds of millions of dollars of deferred costs are out there that are unrecovered,” he said, referring to Rocky Mountain Power’s proposed 18% rate hike in Utah. “I have to get those [expenditures] back to maintain the financial health of the utility to be able to get the access to the capital to continue. And it’s hard.” Though lawmakers in Wyoming and Utah acknowledge PacifiCorp’s advantageous economies-of-scale for operating in six western states, officials in both states remain skeptical of the company’s integrity. Some have suggested its multi-state model provides enough of a shell game to potentially pass on costs imposed by one state to another. In response to those concerns, PacifiCorp appears willing to sunset its “multi-state protocol” — a forum of stakeholders who review system-wide costs and negotiate how PacifiCorp should allocate them among each of the six states, according to those close to the process. Until recently, Garlish said, PacifiCorp’s multi-state operations worked well to provide reliable electrical service at relatively low and stable rates while the company navigated six different state authorities with conflicting energy portfolio priorities and ever-changing environmental standards from the federal government. “It worked really well,” Garlish said. “That’s not where we are today.” In fact, the model isn’t working particularly well for PacifiCorp either, Garlish added, describing an untenable “whiplash” from trying to appease all of the divergent authorities over it. “I get that people are frustrated,” he said. “I get that the [Utah] Legislature is frustrated. I get the customers are frustrated. The talented outside back has played six games for Queensland since debuting in 2022 just a few days after his 20th birthday, while he has also played one Test for the Kangaroos. But several off-field controversies have seen Cobbo fall out of favour at the Broncos and it’s doubtful he’ll earn a new deal when his current one expires at the end of next season, especially given that the Broncos are trying to keep fellow big-money centre Kotoni Staggs. With 43 tries in 68 NRL games, Cobbo has the potential to be a superstar in the NRL at either fullback or centre, but he needs a big year to convince Michael Maguire he is in the Broncos’ long-term plans. RAIDERS Ricky Stuart Canberra’s longest-serving coach has been given several years to rebuild since their premiership window closed in 2020 and it’s time to deliver. The Raiders have one of the youngest squads in the NRL and they looked the goods at the back end of the season, notching up three straight wins to just miss the top eight. So if they regress in 2025, it will be time for the club to seriously ask itself if their prodigal son is still capable of delivering a drought-breaking premiership. 2025 will be Stuart’s 12th year in charge of the Raiders and after 260 wins from 516 NRL games, it is time to start contending for a first title since his rookie year with the Roosters back in 2002. SHARKS Nicho Hynes Cronulla’s No.7 is their highest-paid player, but Hynes was outclassed by his unassuming halves partner, Braydon Trindall in 2024. Hynes was picked for NSW, yet for the second straight season axed after the Blues lost Game I and his club form suffered. Hynes played a reduced role in the Sharks’ drought-breaking finals win but he’ll need to play to his $1 million price tag next year if they’re going to be genuine contenders. Turning 29 in 2025, Hynes now has 23 tries in 100 NRL games and the time has come for him to take ownership of the team and lead them to a first premiership since 2016. DOLPHINS Kristian Woolf There’s no sugar-coating it: rookie coach Kristian Woolf will be feeling the heat to do something that hasn’t been done in decades. Wayne Bennett has been replaced at NRL clubs six times and it’s 30 years since any of his successors tasted sustained success; and that was Tim Sheens at the Raiders. Dolphins officials believe Woolf will end the curse because he’s the product of a succession plan years in the making, but try telling that to Jason Demetriou, who did the same thing at Souths and lasted just 58 games. The loss of retired skipper Jesse Bromwich can’t be understated and Woolf needs to get his leadership team in place to set the standards going forward if the Dolphins are to make a maiden finals appearance in 2025. RABBITOHS Latrell Mitchell The most polarising player in the NRL will start the 2025 season suspended over his white substance scandal, unless he is allowed to count the All Stars game towards it. Mitchell has reportedly quit drinking alcohol and dropped around 5kg since the scandal and now it’s time to deliver on his enormous potential. The 27-year-old is back playing for his favourite coach, Wayne Bennett, but he’ll need to justify his $1 million pay cheque. With 106 tries and 1,165 points in 171 NRL games, there is no doubting Mitchell’s class, but he needs to show more consistency on both sides of the ball as a fullback and lead Souths to a drought-breaking title. DRAGONS Kyle Flanagan The son of Dragons coach Shane Flanagan was impressive at different stages of last season, but now he’s got to deliver without Ben Hunt. Kangaroos and Maroons star Hunt joined the Broncos and left Flanagan as the chief playmaker in Wollongong, while he has also signed a two-year extension. As we’ve seen with father-son duos at the Eels and Broncos, if the losses start mounting up then the criticism will come thick and fast for both Flanagans. No longer a youngster, Flanagan turns 27 in 2025 and will play his 100th game in Round 1 after he was banned for biting late last season, so it is time to step up and deliver, especially with Lachlan Ilias and Daniel Atkinson joining the club over the next two seasons. ROOSTERS Brandon Smith The Roosters thought they could harness Smith’s enormous personality when they won a six-club race for his signature, but it hasn’t worked out. The club won’t be extending his deal that runs until the end of next season, which means Smith will be playing for his next contract in 2025 when he returns from injury. Considering Smith will be 30 in the first year of his next deal, it will likely be his last for significant money, so the Kiwi international will want to get paid and to do that, he’ll need to rediscover the form that made him a rep star. With 27 tries in 148 NRL games and 13 Tests for the Kiwis to his name, Smith has had a solid career, but is yet to realise his potential as a starting No.9 in the NRL. TIGERS Benji Marshall Nobody thought it would work out when the Tigers announced Benji Marshall as their next coach - and so far it hasn’t. The Tigers collected a third-straight wooden spoon in Marshall’s first season at the helm last year and some pundits believe they’ll win a fourth in 2025. Almost no coach survives back-to-back wooden spoons, let alone if it also means a fourth straight, even if you are a club legend; so the pressure will be on Marshall to not only avoid last place, but also push to end the longest finals drought in the NRL, stretching back to 2011. With just six wins from 24 games last season, Marshall has a much better team on paper in 2025, but his forward stocks still look a little light to make a big climb up the ladder next season. WARRIORS Andrew Webster The previously unknown Webster went from 2023 Dally M Coach of the Year to pulling his hair out and missing finals the very next season. The Warriors finished a disappointing 13th this year and if Webster can’t correct the course with star recruit James Fisher-Harris on his books, he’ll be on the chopping block. The third-year coach should look to Cowboys’ Todd Payten, who also suffered second-year syndrome before guiding his side back to the finals this year. Not many teams lose their halfback and get better, so after Shaun Johnson’s retirement, Webster needs to unearth a new No.7 to have any hope of getting back to the finals in 2025. BULLDOGS Matt Burton Turning 25 in 2025, Matt Burton’s place in the Bulldogs side is safe, but the pressure is on him to take ownership of the team and take them to greater heights next season. The club have invested in him to be their main man and chief playmaker, and he is now in the sweet spot of his career for NRL halves and needs to deliver more consistency. With 39 tries in 102 NRL games, Burton has the experience to up his game next season and start creating more try-scoring opportunities for both himself and more importantly his teammates, if the Bulldogs are to push for a deeper finals run. The Bulldogs’ spine is solid without being spectacular, so they desperately need Burton to take his game to another level to match the elite teams in the competition. TITANS AJ Brimson Apart from skipper Tino Fa’asuamaleaui (2033), AJ Brimson owns the longest current contract at the Titans, which expires in 2030, yet he doesn’t have a set position in the side. At his best, Brimson is a walk up start at fullback or five-eighth, but injuries have opened the door for Keano Kini and Jayden Campbell to rise above him in the spine pecking order. With 43 tries in 112 games, the 26-year-old is now in the sweet spot of his career, but after a failed switch to the centres, Des Hasler needs to work out where is best to play Brimson. Kini deserves first shot at fullback, so Brimson will be fighting with Campbell and former Wallaby Carter Gordon for the five-eighth role alongside Kieran Foran, or he may have to have another crack at making the centre position his own. The Titans have plenty of options at fullback and five-eighth, but it is up to Brimson and the other contenders to stand up and take ownership of the roles and deliver more consistency to cement a spot in the side and get the Titans back to the finals. SEA EAGLES Tolu Koula In 2023, Tolu Koula was one of the most exciting prospects in the NRL as a potential fullback and winger with blinding speed, but after converting to a full-time centre his career has stalled. Koula has been solid with 21 tries in 60 NRL games, but the 22-year-old has yet to realise his immense potential as a centre. Having lost his Tonga fullback spot to club teammate Lehi Hopoate, Koula is now behind him and Tom Trbojevic in the Manly No.1 pecking order and needs to show more consistency as a centre. Hopoate and Tommy Talau are keeping the pressure on Koula’s spot in the backline and while he will get first crack at partnering Reuben Garrick, Hopoate will be pushing hard for a permanent starting spot in 2025, so the competition for spots will be fierce. STORM Ryan Papenhuyzen A premiership winner and Clive Churchill Medallist with 62 tries in 92 NRL games, Ryan Papenhuyzen’s spot in the side shouldn’t be in question, except for who is waiting in the wings. Sualauvi Fa’alogo is considered one of the hottest prospects in the NRL and will be pushing for more game time in 2025. Papenhuyzen recently signed a one-year extension for 2027, but Fa’alogo is signed until 2028 and is the younger fullback prospect with more long-term potential. Papenhuyzen needs to put his injury troubles behind him and show more consistency in the fullback role, or the Storm may need to look at putting Fa’alogo in the No.1 jersey to avoid him leaving the club to get more opportunities elsewhere. KNIGHTS Jack Cogger By all reports, Jack Cogger is likely to shift from five-eighth to the halfback role ahead of Phoenix Crossland and Jackson Hastings in 2025, but he is a long way from cementing a starting spot at this stage. The fact the club went hard for Storm halfback Jonah Pezet means the Knights are not sold on their halfback options in Cogger, Crossland and Hastings. Crossland is the incumbent Kiwis No.9 and could finish up at hooker if Jayden Brailey leaves the club, but he finished last season at halfback and may play there again in 2025, if Cogger doesn’t cement the chief playmaker role. With Will Pryce and Tyson Gamble also vying for a spot in the halves, it is up to Cogger and all the playmaker contenders to step up and help Kalyn Ponga or the club will go to market again to find the right halves. COWBOYS Jake Clifford Jake Clifford returned to the Cowboys last season and usurped Chad Townsend as the club’s halfback in their run to the finals playing eight games. Turning 27 in 2025, Clifford has 12 tries in 75 NRL games and five tries in 26 games for Hull FC in the Super League, so he has the experience behind him to be a consistent playmaker. However, Cowboys skipper Tom Dearden could be in line to shift to the halfback role in the future to take more ownership of the team, after spending most of his juniors in the position. The Cowboys also have Tom Duffy as a promising halfback option, so the pressure will be on Clifford in a contract year to cement the No.7 jersey by showing more consistency and creating try-scoring opportunities for his teammates. EELS Dylan Brown The owner of the longest contract at the Eels through until 2031, albeit with player options to leave in 2026, the time has come for Dylan Brown to live up to the club’s immense investment in their playmaker. Turning 25 in 2025 and with 32 tries in 123 NRL games, Brown is no longer the promising youngster and needs to step up and take ownership of the team with Mitchell Moses. Clint Gutherson’s departure has left a massive leadership void and it is up to Brown to help fill it and take the club forward into a new era under Jason Ryles. With a rookie fullback in Isaiah Iongi and a lack of an elite hooker, the Eels need Brown to have his best season yet and consistently create more try-scoring opportunities for himself and the team in 2025. PANTHERS Blaize Talagi There is arguably no bigger shoes to fill in the NRL than replacing four time premiership winning five-eighth and Origin star Jarome Luai at the Panthers. Blaize Talagi is still just 19 and scored the bulk of his 11 tries in 20 games for the Eels at fullback and in the outside backs. His switch to the Panthers will see him vie for Luai’s old No.6 jersey with Jack Cole and Brad Schneider for the right to partner Nathan Cleary in the Penrith halves. Talagi has all the talent to make a splash as an NRL playmaker and having Cleary beside him will make things a lot easier, but at such a young age it will take time for him to make the position his own and develop a combination as the club hunts a fifth straight title.Sullinger leads Kent State past Div. Beirut, Dec 7 (AP) Insurgents' stunning march across Syria accelerated on Saturday with news that they had reached the suburbs of the capital and that government forces had withdrawn from the central city of Homs. The government was forced to deny rumours that President Bashar Assad had fled the country. The loss of Homs is a potentially crippling blow for Assad. It stands at an important intersection between Damascus and Syria's coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus — the Syrian leader's base of support and home to a Russian strategic naval base. The pro-government Sham FM reported that government forces took positions outside Syria's third-largest city, without elaborating.
