BISMARCK — North Dakota’s new and returning lawmakers met at the state Capitol in Bismarck on Monday, Dec. 2, commencing the three-day organizational session ahead of the lawmaking season. The organizational session is the time during which lawmakers — namely those who are newly elected — familiarize themselves with the procedures and rules necessary to carry out the lawmaking process. It does not count towards the biennial lawmaking session that begins January and lasts up to 80 days. ADVERTISEMENT Twenty-two new lawmakers are heading into the 69th legislative session, including two members who returned after not being reelected in recent elections: Sen. Richard Marcellais, D-Belcourt, and Rep. Daniel Johnston, R-Kathryn. Day one included the speaker of the House appointment, committee designations and the swearing-in ceremony. The more menial tasks on the agenda for lawmakers involved computer training, seating arrangement and taking fresh headshots. “Times change, things are different. We have to make sure that everybody’s up to speed,” said House Majority Leader Mike Lefor, R-Dickinson. “You’re going to have your agreements, you’re going to have your disagreements," he said. "But it’s all in the spirit of providing the best public policy that we possibly can.” Both House Republicans and Democrats unanimously agreed on nominating Rep. Robin Weisz to serve as speaker of the House. Weisz described the chamber as “the people’s house” while addressing the Legislature from the podium for the first time as speaker. District 41 newcomer Karen Grindberg, R-Fargo, was also unanimously elected by the district to replace Lt. Gov.-elect Michelle Strinden. ADVERTISEMENT “It’s just really exciting how welcoming everybody is and how they want to be helpful,” Grindberg said. Though the intimate details tied to lawmaking are new to the freshman legislator, coming to the Capitol has become second nature. “We used to run around the halls when we were little, that was our favorite thing to do after school," she said. Grindberg’s father was a lawmaker for 22 years and the Republican House Majority Leader. Meanwhile, her husband, Tony Grindberg, was a senator for more than 20 years. She is also the mother of North Dakota Treasurer Thomas Beadle and mother-in-law to Strinden. “I’m excited for the opportunity," Karen Grindberg said. "I want to get to work.” Tuesday’s training will be similar, paying particular attention to ethical topics like workplace harassment and social media conduct. Interim committee findings will also be briefly presented to lawmakers. ADVERTISEMENT The session will conclude Wednesday with the presentation and deliberations of Gov. Doug Burgum’s final budget address. Republicans maintain supermajorities in both chambers, outnumbering Democrats 83-11 in the House and 42-5 in the Senate. Neither party will see different leaders for the 2025 session. Lefor and Senate Majority Leader David Hogue, R-Minot, were reelected during Republican caucus meetings last month. Sen. Kathy Hogan, D-Fargo, and Rep. Zac Ista, D-Grand Forks, were reelected as Senate and House minority leaders during the respective state Democratic-NPL caucases.Nurix Therapeutics chief legal officer sells $125,155 in stockCommvault Systems director sells $212,520 in stocknice ph casino login

Global arms revenues surge on the back of war: Sales hit US$632b in 2023, report reveals

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams have claimed cornerback Emmanuel Forbes off waivers from Washington. The Rams (6-6) announced the move Monday. They waived undrafted rookie defensive back Charles Woods to make room on the roster. Forbes was the 16th overall draft pick in 2023, but the Commanders released him Saturday in yet another latest flop for their first-round selections under former coach Ron Rivera. Forbes started 10 games as a rookie, but the Mississippi State product got benched during the season — and his playing time dwindled to almost nothing under new coach Dan Quinn this season. Forbes was considered undersized to be an elite NFL defensive back before Washington used a first-round pick on him, and his play did little to discourage that perception. But the Rams are taking a flier on Forbes to help their mediocre pass defense. Darious Williams, a member of the Rams' Super Bowl championship team who returned to Los Angeles this season as a free agent, has been their best cover corner, but he struggled in Sunday's victory over New Orleans. Third-year pro Cobie Durant has started all 12 games this season with one interception. Los Angeles already traded Tre'Davious White, its other major offseason signing at cornerback, after the former Pro Bowler failed to perform. The Rams shipped White to Baltimore for a seventh-round pick swap last month. Woods has played in nine games for the Rams, appearing mostly on special teams. Los Angeles hosts Buffalo on Sunday. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/NFLWASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has named billionaire investment banker Warren Stephens as his envoy to Britain, a prestigious posting for the Republican donor whose contributions this year included $2 million to a Trump-backing super PAC. Trump, in a post on his Truth Social site Monday evening, announced he was selecting Stephens to be the U.S. ambassador to the Court of Saint James. The Senate is required to confirm the choice. “Warren has always dreamed of serving the United States full time. I am thrilled that he will now have that opportunity as the top Diplomat, representing the U.S.A. to one of America’s most cherished and beloved Allies,” Trump said in in his post. Stephens is the chairman, president and CEO of Little Rock, Arkansas-based financial services firm Stephens Inc., having taken over the firm from his father. Trump has already named many of his nominees for his Cabinet and high-profile diplomatic posts, assembling a roster of staunch loyalists. Over the weekend, Trump announced he intends to nominate real estate developer Charles Kushner , father of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as ambassador to France. During his first term, Trump selected Robert “Woody” Johnson, a contributor to his campaign and the owner of the New York Jets football team, as his representative to the United Kingdom.
