However, there was no major panic this time. It was a completely different story almost three years earlier: when Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Europe was thrown off balance for various reasons. "One of them was dependence on Russian gas. Many countries, especially those like Austria, which purchased around 80% of its gas from Russia in 2021, had to take action quickly to reduce this dependence and ensure supply security," explains Anton Pichler from the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) and the Vienna University of Economics and Business. "We had to react—and in a highly dynamic environment." This was the basis for a study now published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization and released as a policy brief in May 2022. In a hypothetical scenario where Russian gas imports to Europe were completely halted from June 1, 2022, the researchers quantified the effects of different measures. "That way, we won't have to start the discussion about the catastrophe, but with possible solutions already on hand," says CSH President Stefan Thurner. Five times less damage The researchers analyzed various measures to mitigate the potential economic impact, including alternative gas imports, gas storage , a switch to different fuels, and savings in heating and pipeline operations. Additionally, they modeled their impact on individual sectors as well as the economy overall. "As early as spring 2022, we were able to point out that a coordinated distribution of scarce gas supplies among the EU members could reduce production declines five times less than if Austria tried to secure additional gas individually," explains Thurner. "In fact, the first steps were taken at EU level in the following months, such as filling gas storage facilities, which was subsequently given a strong political push," adds Pichler. Coordinated EU action Full gas storage facilities are one of the most important levers for being prepared for a gas supply freeze in the short term, but a coordinated crisis response at the EU level is also crucial—as foreigners own about half of Austria's gas reserves. "Austria has well-filled storage facilities today, with nearly 50TWh of stored gas, i.e. two thirds of annual consumption in 2023, under Austrian ownership. Along with alternative supply routes, these gas storage facilities are one of the reasons why we are much better able to compensate for Gazprom's current gas supply freeze to OMV," says Pichler. In contrast, even a partial interruption of Russian natural gas supply in Austria in 2022 would have led to a loss of several hundred million euros per month in gross value added, according to the study. Austria: Still Russian gas Austria imported 82% of its gas from Russia in August 2024, while other European countries have long since reduced their imports from Russia. Only 8% of all EU gas imports come from Russia. Because other European countries are now significantly less dependent on Russian gas supplies, the expected economic consequences will be much smaller than in June 2022, according to the two researchers. "In our policy brief, we showed that alternative trading partners can play a key role in reducing damage. Now that our neighboring countries are hardly dependent on Russian gas, it is much easier to import non-Russian gas than it would have been two years ago," says Pichler. Mild to severe effects Based on the hypothetical scenario of a complete halt to Russian gas imports to Europe from June 1, 2022, the study shows that the potential economic consequences can range from relatively mild to extremely severe, depending on countermeasure implementation and success. The study suggests that securing alternative gas imports, managing storage, and providing incentives to switch to other fuels are the most important short-term policy levers. "The results seem almost obvious in retrospect. However, in spring 2022 there was great uncertainty about the potential economic consequences and our study quantified the effectiveness and feasibility of each individual measure," explains Pichler. In light of the critical situation, what have we learned? "Back then, we reacted to a crisis for which we were unprepared. It is possible for crises like this to occur in other important areas as well. It would be extremely important to conduct similar analyses for other critical sectors and technology areas in order to implement preventative countermeasures systematically," the researchers conclude. As the race to introduce artificial intelligence features rages on, Alphabet Inc GOOG GOOGL unveiled a new prototype on Wednesday that could reshape the AI marketplace. Google’s Mariner: “Project Mariner” is an AI prototype that operates within users’ browsers using Google’s Gemini 2.0 technology. The experimental Chrome extension, not yet available to the public, “combines strong multimodal understanding and reasoning capabilities” to automate users’ tasks. Google says that Mariner can “follow complex instructions and reason across websites.” A promotional video showed the tool utilizing a Google Sheet of company names to scour the Internet for the companies’ contact information. The tool shows the user its reasoning when searching the web, but it cannot operate in the background of a user’s browser. Google says it is working with developers to speed up the tool to make the user experience smoother. It also emphasized that Mariner could be prone to making mistakes. Users interested in accessing the tool can add their names to a “trusted tester” waitlist. Mr Wallace hopes his content will help make the science industry more diverse, saying “the scientists that I was taught about, none of them look like me”. “Now me being a scientist is showing young people that they can become one as well, regardless of the background that they come from, the upbringing that they’ve had,” he said. “I just want to make it seem more attainable and possible for them because if I can do it, and I come from the same place as you, there’s no reason why you can’t do it as well.” The TikToker has seen a shift in more young people turning to the app as a learning resource and feels short-form videos will soon become a part of the national curriculum in schools. “I’m seeing (young people) using that a lot more – social media as a resource for education – and I feel like in the future, it’s going to become more and more popular as well,” he said. “I get a lot of comments from students saying that my teacher showed my video in the classroom as a resource, so I feel like these short form videos are going to be integrated within the national curriculum at some point in the near future.” He also uses his platform to raise awareness of different social issues, which he said is “extremely important”. One of his videos highlighted an anti-knife campaign backed by actor Idris Elba, which earned more than 39 million views, while his clip about the banning of disposable vapes was viewed more than 4.6 million times. He said there is some pressure being a teacher with a large following online but hopes he can be a role model for young people. “I’m aware that I am in the public eye and there’s a lot of young people watching me,” he said. “Young people can be impressionable, so I make sure that I conduct myself appropriately, so that I can be a role model. “I always have the same message for young people, specifically. I tell them to stay curious. Always ask questions and look a little bit deeper into things.” His plans for 2025 include publishing a second Science Is Lit book and expanding his teaching to television where he soon hopes to create his own science show.
BOULDER, Colo. — A 72-year-old lifelong Colorado fan with end-stage kidney failure waited to the side of the field in his wheelchair for Travis Hunter and the rest of the Buffaloes. One by one, players strolled over and signed a football for Riley Rhoades, his face lighting up with each signature. Standing close by and taking in the scene was Jeremy Bloom. He's become a wish facilitator for older adults. Bloom, the former Colorado wide receiver and Olympic freestyle skier, started the Wish of a Lifetime foundation in 2008, which has made thousands of aspirations turn into reality for older adults. The list of granted wishes range from taking veterans back to the beaches of Normandy to helping late-in-life authors publish a book. He's staged concerts for musicians, assisted some in daredevil feats such as jumping out of an airplane and even lined up a meeting between an Olympic medalist and former President Barack Obama. For Rhoades, his wish was simply to return to Folsom Field again, the place where he used to have season tickets but hasn't attended a game since 2004. "Everybody has somebody in their life —a grandparent, friend, neighbor — at that age where you wish you had more resources to help," said Bloom, whose college career was cut short two decades ago when the NCAA denied his reinstatement to play football and still ski professionally after receiving endorsement money to fuel his Olympic dreams. "Nothing can compare to seeing someone else's eyes light up because you helped make their dream come true." The foundation is a tribute to his grandparents. But the concept began to take root when he was a teenager. He was in Japan for a World Cup freestyle skiing competition when a woman tried to hop on a crowded bus. There was no room, but everyone in front rose from their seats to make space. That stuck with him, along with seeing these acts of kindness for older adults all over Europe and Asia as he traveled. An idea formed — bring that same level of appreciation to the United States, with a wish-granting element. Bloom's organization has been a charitable affiliate of AARP since 2020. It was the yearning of Rhoades that brought the two of them to Folsom Field last weekend. Rhoades, who had season tickets at Colorado for 27 years, wanted to see the Buffaloes in person after watching the team's resurgence on television. A few years ago, Rhoades, who was born with spina bifida, was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. Being among the 54,646 fans Saturday stirred up plenty of emotions for Rhoades, as he watched the 16th-ranked Buffaloes (8-2, 6-1 Big 12, No. 16 CFP) beat Utah. Colorado remains in the race for not only a conference title but a spot in the College Football Playoff. "It's just great to be back here again," Rhoades said as he pointed out the section where he used to watch games. "It's just ... so cool." For Bloom, the success that coach Deion Sanders has brought to the program means more reunions with teammates as they pass through town. "I've been through many years where nobody comes to visit," Bloom said. "It's fun that Boulder has become the epicenter of college football." Leading the way for Colorado this season have been quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Hunter, who's the Heisman Trophy frontrunner. But what particularly pleases Bloom is that Sanders, Hunter and the rest of college football players are able to finally profit through name, image and likeness. In his day, Bloom got caught in the NCAA crosshairs for wanting to play both sports and to have sponsors in one (skiing) so he could fund his Olympic aspirations. How time have changed. "I'm just really grateful that this generation of athletes gets to monetize their skills and ability," said Bloom, who finished sixth in moguls at the 2006 Winter Games in Italy. "It's the right thing." He's thrown his passion into fulfilling wishes such as learning ballet, riding in a Formula 1 pace car or taking a flight in a fighter jet. He's also helped reconnect families and friends, including a reunion for a trio of centenarian sisters who hadn't seen each other in more than a decade. This granted wish has stuck with Bloom: A person in Alabama wasn't able to travel after being diagnosed with end-of-life emphysema. So he asked for postcards to be sent, just to learn what made someone's town so special. He received 2,000 postcards from 26 different countries. "There's no end to the things that they've done for us in the world," Bloom said of older adults. "We're one of the organizations that reminds them that their dreams still do matter and that we still appreciate them and we cherish them."

There is growing consumer consciousness about the environmental impact of where people choose to shop and the sustainability of the products they buy. According to McKinsey, over 60% of individuals surveyed in 2020 said they would be willing to pay more for a product that is packaged in an eco-friendly way. Since 2019, products marketed as being environmentally sustainable have seen a 28% growth in revenue compared to 20% for products with no such marketing, a 2023 McKinsey and NielsenIQ report found. Much of this is thanks to the preferences and attitudes of Gen Z, who, on average, care more than their older counterparts about being informed shoppers. The younger generation also has more social justice and environmental awareness altogether. Shoppers are willing to spend around 9.7% more on a product they know is sourced or manufactured sustainably, with 46% saying they would do so explicitly because they want to reduce their environmental footprint, according to a 2024 PwC report. Sustainable practices consumers look for from companies include production methods, packaging, and water conservation. But despite the growing consciousness around being more environmentally responsible, consumer actions don’t always align with their values. In psychology, this is defined as the “say-do gap”: the phenomenon wherein people openly express concern and intention around an issue, but fail to take tangible action to make a change. According to the Harvard Business Review in 2019, most consumers (65%) say they want to buy from brands that promote sustainability, but only 1 in 4 follow through. So why don’t people actually shop sustainably, despite how much they express a preference for eco-friendly products—and how can we close the gap? The RealReal examined reports from the Harvard Business Review and other sources to explore why some shoppers want to buy sustainably but struggle to follow through. This lack of action isn’t due to a lack of caring—in many cases, it’s hard to know how to be a sustainable consumer and other factors are often outside of shoppers’ control. But the more people shop sustainably, the easier and more accessible that market will be for everyone—making it much easier for folks to buy aligned with their values. There are many obstacles preventing shoppers from upholding eco-friendly habits as much as they may want to—but not all of these barriers are necessarily real, or accurately understood. Shopping sustainably simply isn’t convenient or accessible for many. Those who live in apartment buildings are 50% less likely to recycle , according to Ipsos. Reasons for this can vary from lack of space to buildings being excluded altogether because of recycling contamination issues. Many believe that sustainable products are too expensive or of a lower quality. The former is often true, which does create a hurdle for many: The manufacturing processes and materials for sustainable products are pricey. For instance, organic cotton requires an intensive production process free of certain chemicals or pesticides; by definition, true eco-friendly products can’t be mass-produced, further upping their price tag. Using recycled materials for packaging, or obtaining an eco certification, can also be expensive. However, although the narrative of eco-friendly products being more expensive is true, there is often more of an effort to use better quality materials that last longer than their noneco-friendly counterparts. This could end up saving consumers money in the long run: By paying more upfront, they can get more wear out of sustainable fashion, for instance. There is also undeniable political rhetoric surrounding eco-friendly products—however, despite many Conservative politicians decrying sustainable products, members of all generations are increasingly choosing to prioritize shopping sustainably regardless of their political affiliation, according to research from NYU Stern Center for Sustainable Business . This finding shows a trend toward seeing sustainability as a nonpartisan subject everyone can benefit from, no matter where they lie on the political spectrum. Some might think eco-friendly clothing, in particular, is not fashion-forward; after all, many of the top clothing retailers in the world partake in fast fashion. However, brands are increasingly being recognized as ‘cool’ and ‘trendy’ for supporting environmentally ethical practices, particularly as younger generations prioritize sustainability, as noted before. Many increasingly popular online stores are taking advantage of this paradigm shift by offering secondhand shopping options that are not only fashionable, but also more affordable, like ThredUp or Poshmark. Additionally, many legacy large-name brands are hopping on the sustainability movement and are gaining appreciation from loyal customers. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly program partners with third-party certification bodies to make it easier for shoppers to identify eco-friendly products as they browse the website. H&M’s newly launched H&M Rewear program debuts a resale platform that allows the resale of all clothing brands—not just their own. Similarly, Patagonia’s Worn Wear program allows shoppers to trade in and buy used gear and clothing. The federal government is also working to close this gap. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Safer Choice program is attempting to make sustainable shopping easier for consumers and companies alike. It includes a directory of certified products, a list of safer chemicals to look out for on labels, a “Safer Choice” label that products can earn to denote they are eco-friendly, and resources for manufacturers looking to adopt more sustainable practices. Most of all, though, the biggest way shoppers can shift toward sustainable shopping is through their behaviors and attitudes amongst their peers and communities. Studies show that humans largely care what others think of their actions; the more shoppers make environmentally conscious shopping the norm, the more others will follow suit. From an economic perspective, the more consumers shop eco-friendly, the more affordable and accessible these products will become, too: Sustainable products are currently more expensive because they are not in high demand.
