Happy New Year! It’s crazy how fast time seems to fly by. As we review how this past year has gone, we are delighted with how much was accomplished. Over $1,158,783 worth of improvements were made in 2024, such as building the Interurban Trail, finishing Lancaster Park, and maintaining our other facilities. Large projects require lots of financial resources, and we are thankful to have been blessed with $332,590.26 in local donations and from our new partnership with Harrison Township. Our department also secured $494,023 in grants this year, helping us prepare for our 2025 projects. Next year looks to be just as busy as this year was, with multiple projects on the books. After the baseball season ends in early July, Roush Park will be closed for major parking lot upgrades, including installing drainage, adding ADA sidewalks, and repaving the basketball court. The Wabash River Stabilization project to repair 1,100 feet of the riverbank from Wayne Street to the Howard Rich Pavilion will also commence in the summer while the river is in a low position. If all goes well with funding, there is a good possibility that as soon as the pool closes for the season, construction on the new one can begin. We are so grateful for the continued community support; we truly could not do it without all of you! Have you always wanted to learn how to Crochet? NEW YORK — Steve Cohen had lofty goals for the Mets when he bought the team from the Wilpon family late in 2020. Slowly, he’s delivering on those goals. While the top goal is winning multiple World Series championships, Cohen also wanted to turn the Mets into a global brand and a premier destination for MLB’s most elite players, coaches and executives. Juan Soto choosing the Mets over a pool of big spending clubs, including the Yankees, shows just how the perception of the team has changed. On a phone call with Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, Cohen had a moment of realization that the Mets were no longer what they were when he took over his childhood team. “I think we should talk about the Cohen effect on Cohen,” Boras said earlier this month after the Mets introduced Soto at Citi Field. “The next day after [Soto signed], Steve called me and goes, ‘I had no idea — this is an international event.’ I think it brought itself to that.” Fans of the Mets and Yankees alike have been arguing for a week over which team truly represents New York. The Yankees have always had global appeal, with rappers, actors and even Ohio-born LeBron James having donned the classic hat in paparazzi photos over the years. The team has long had a multitude of stars that became household names, from Babe Ruth to Joe DiMaggio to Derek Jeter. Yankee Stadium is both a tourist destination and a place for business meetings. The Mets have always appealed to a more working-class Queens community. It’s the team of Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, Hank Azaria and well, Grimace. Citi Field always felt like the antithesis of Yankee Stadium, but never more so than during Game 3 of the NLDS when Grimace came out holding Pete Alonso’s lucky playoff pumpkin and all of the wacky mascots from the 2024 season showed up as well: Glizzy Iggy the dog, the “Rally Pimp” and even 97-year-old Seymour Weiner, who recorded a video message for the fans. It felt like a baseball version of “Avengers: Endgame.” Still, the Mets lagged behind the Yankees in attendance last season. But Soto seems to be driving ticket sales already, with Cohen recently saying sales have “exploded” in a post on X. This is exactly what Cohen wanted when he approached Stearns about pursuing Soto in free agency, and it’s why he had no problem including so many perks for Soto’s family in his record, 15-year, $765 million contract. “One thing I’ve learned a long time ago, if you want something that’s amazing, it’s going to be uncomfortable,” Cohen said. “It’s never going to be comfortable. And so I always stretch a little bit, you know, because I know that’s what it takes to get it done.” It’s almost hard to remember how difficult it was for the Mets to attract a general manager in 2022. Francisco Lindor helped the Mets take a big first step toward these goals when he signed a 10-year, $341 million extension just hours before Opening Day in 2021. Buck Showalter helped them take another step with a 101-win season in 2022. A clubhouse culture was established and so were certain standards. Meanwhile, Cohen and his wife, Alex, worked behind the scenes to transform the club. Alex renovated the family room and took over the Amazin’ Mets Foundation. Steve infused the club with cash to help bring player development up to speed and improve the team’s technology. The Mets now have an enviable analytics department, more support staff at just about every level of the minor leagues and, finally, a pitching lab in Port St. Lucie, Fla., something just about every other team has had for years. “We were a place — and are a place — that players want to play,” president of baseball operations David Stearns. “That we have a culture where everyone [from] players, coaches [and] staff enjoy coming to the ballpark every day and enjoy each other, I think that was part of it.” Stearns himself helped the Mets take another impactful step. He was exactly the type of savvy executive Cohen had been looking for. Soto got everything he wanted with the Mets, showing just how far the team has come.Atria Investments Inc Sells 2,789 Shares of The Toronto-Dominion Bank (NYSE:TD)An old rivalry game takes place in a new league as the USC Trojans face the UCLA Bruins for the first time as Big Ten members in Week 13 of the 2024 college football season. Congress readies nearly $900 billion in defense spendingLOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams faced fourth-and-5 at the Buffalo 35 with a 38-35 lead and just under four minutes to play Sunday in their high-octane showdown with the Bills. Sean McVay is often a conservative coach, and it would not have been surprising to see him try a long field goal, or even punt. He kept his offense on the field, and Matthew Stafford calmly went through his progression before finding Tutu Atwell across the middle for an 11-yard gain that played a major role in the Rams' ability to hold on for a season-altering, 44-42 victory over the powerhouse Bills . “We felt like we needed to make it a two-possession game,” McVay said Monday. “They were rolling. We talked about aggressively going to win that game. ... It was just a reflection of the confidence in that group and what we felt like we needed to do to be able to win the game.” The Rams offense has earned the confidence McVay showed in it at that crucial moment. That unit hasn't always been good this season, entering last weekend rated just 18th in the league, but the Rams finally are mostly healthy heading down the stretch — and Puka Nacua and Kyren Williams are again playing at last season's Pro Bowl level. That was bad news for Buffalo, and it could mean trouble for the rest of the NFC if the Rams (7-6) can keep scoring like this. Los Angeles will hope to keep this offensive momentum on a short week heading to San Francisco on Thursday night. Nacua said it was “fantastic being able to feel like, man, this is what it feels like when the Rams are moving and connecting on all cylinders.” Los Angeles had six scoring drives of at least 65 yards while racking up 457 yards against Buffalo. Stafford had a season-high 320 yards passing, while Nacua had another spectacular game with 162 yards receiving and two touchdowns along with 16 yards rushing and another TD on five carries. Incredibly, it was the Rams’ first 40-point game with Stafford behind center. Thanks to that stellar offensive performance, the Rams are above .500 for the first time all season and just one game back of Seattle (8-5) in the NFC West after winning six of their past eight games. A team that appeared to be headed for a grim season after a 1-4 start is still firmly in the playoff race, also trailing Washington (8-5) by just one game for the final wild-card spot. “It’s cool to be able to play meaningful football in December,” said McVay, who led the Rams to five playoff berths in his first seven seasons. "You never take that for granted.” The offense hummed largely because it went 11 of 15 on third downs. That's the Rams' highest success rate in a game since 2001 — and don't forget that crucial fourth down conversion, either. Few teams can stop Josh Allen, but the Rams' defense didn't come close. The defensive backs particularly struggled, from Darious Williams getting beaten repeatedly in coverage to Quentin Lake's 34-yard pass-interference penalty in the final moments. Two weeks after Philadelphia dropped 481 yards at SoFi Stadium, Buffalo had 445 to push the Rams down to 26th in total defense entering Monday. The Rams' offensive line has struggled mightily at times this season, but it allowed no sacks and just three hits on Stafford while clearing the way for 137 yards rushing. With full health, the line is no longer a liability. Edge rusher Byron Young had a rough outing that included two penalties on Buffalo's first drive — an egregious late hit on Allen and a defensive offside that negated a 2-yard Bills loss on second down from the LA 1. The Rams' overall defensive discipline was repeatedly poor, and it cost them. CB Cobie Durant has a bruised lung, McVay revealed Monday. The Rams are uncertain whether it will prevent him from playing Thursday. Durant has started all 13 games this season. ... WR Demarcus Robinson sprained his shoulder against Buffalo, but kept playing. 1 — The numbers of NFL games played with two teams scoring at least 40 points and making no turnovers. The Rams and Bills made history. The 49ers haven't been this vulnerable in four years, but Kyle Shanahan has had McVay's number throughout their careers — notwithstanding the Rams' 27-24 comeback win in September when both teams' top offensive playmakers were all injured.
